Mayor De Blasio has put together a proposed rezoning plan for Soho and Noho to create 800 affordable homes. This is currently under public land use review process, i.e. ULURP. The effort would bring more affordable housing to these upscale New York neighborhoods.

De Blasio believes making these areas more affordable will create a more “accessible” and “fairer” city.

Opponents of the plan believe this will create more large, luxury buildings in historic areas. Andrew Berman, executive director of Village Preservation, believes this will result in construction of large buildings with only a few units set aside for affordable housing – changing the landscape of the neighborhood, as well as affordability.
